Xcel Outdoors

Connecting Young People with Nature, Skills, and Wellbeing

The Xcel Outdoors project is all about giving young people the chance to explore the outdoors, learn new skills, and take time to focus on their wellbeing. Inspired by the feedback from young people Xcel Outdoors was created to provide a safe, supportive, and engaging space where they can be themselves.

Our Outdoor Space

We are developing a dedicated outdoor space and classroom to serve as the base for Xcel Outdoors. This space will also be available for local community organisations, making it a true community project.

The development of the space is planned in two phases:

Phase 1
Creation and development of the outdoor classroom and surrounding area.

Phase 2
Using the space for Xcel Outdoors activities, including bushcraft, den building, fire lighting, campfire cooking, and wildlife observation.

Why Xcel Outdoors?

The primary goal of Xcel Outdoors is to support young people’s mental health by providing opportunities to spend time in nature, away from the pressures of daily life and technology. Activities like lighting a fire, building a den, or cooking their own food introduce calmness, encourage conversation, and allow young people to simply be themselves.

What We Do

Xcel Outdoors works with small groups of young people, taking them on local adventures such as:

  • Walks in the hills
  • Wild camping
  • Bushcraft and survival skills
  • Fire lighting and campfire cooking
  • Observing and learning about local wildlife

Through these experiences, young people not only learn practical outdoor skills but also grow in confidence and self-expression.

The Benefits

Mental Wellbeing
Time in nature helps reduce stress and encourages calm and reflection.

Skill Development
Learn bushcraft, den building, fire lighting, and cooking outdoors.

Confidence and Teamwork
Small group adventures help build trust, communication, and resilience.

Connection to Nature
Explore the beautiful landscapes of Langholm and discover the outdoors’ potential.

We hope that, through Xcel Outdoors, young people will develop a lasting interest in the outdoors, carrying forward the skills and confidence they gain through the project.
